International Human Rights Day in Jaffna
The 61st anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was commemorated in Jaffna by an event held at Veerasingham Hall. Some of the notable speakers at the event were the Minister of Social Services & Social Welfare Honourable Douglas Devananda, Tamil National Alliance MP Mavai Senathirajah, President of the Democratic People’s Liberation Front D. Siddharthan, EPRLF-Pathmanabha Wing General Secretary T. Sridharan, Leader of the Democratic People's Front Mano Ganeshan and Jaffna Mayor Yogeswari Patkunarajah. The number of participants numbered over one thousand with sizeable representations from the Tamil, Sinhala and Muslim communities.

At the end of the functions at Veerasingham Hall, hundreds of participants walked to the Central Bus Stand to bring awareness of the importance of human rights. The event was concluded with the lighting of oil lamps at Ariyakulam.
