Our Women's Desk strives for the empowerment and equality of women in Sri Lanka. Women in Sri Lanka often have been forced to the margins of society. We consider the subjugation of women and discrimination against them a violation of the basic human right of equality before the law and in society. HHR created its Women Desk to mainstream women's rights into HHR’s overall work and to ensure the special needs of women are addressed through internal gender audits.
Social and Community Services
HHR’s Women’s Desk provides several critical community based services geared towards women. These include social services and counseling for survivors of sexual and domestic violence, visiting hospitalized victims/survivors of assault, rape, or domestic violence, and helping to integrating these women back to their communities. HHR has also organized self-help groups for single mothers where women gather monthly to discuss their unique problems and share ideas on how to address them. The Women’s Desk also helps displaced women and children return home or adapt to their new surroundings.
Legal Literacy on Violence Against Women
One of HHR’s most important services is its legal literacy program. HHR conducts several two-day seminars across the country every year to inform women of their rights and legal remedies available to them if these rights are violated. This program ensures that these women’s wellbeing is not dependent on the presence of HHR, but rather they can better act to protect their human rights themselves if necessary.
